The Price of Love: The Emotional Toll of Animal Rescue
Updated: Sep 24, 2023
As an animal rescue worker, I know firsthand the struggles and challenges that come with this line of work. It can be emotionally taxing and overwhelming at times, and I have experienced moments of burnout that have left me feeling exhausted, hopeless, and drained.
The animals we work with come to us from a variety of situations, and many have suffered abuse, neglect, and trauma. It is our job to help them heal, both physically and emotionally, and to provide them with the love and care they need to thrive. But this work can take a toll on our own emotional well-being, as we witness the pain and suffering of animals on a daily basis.
There have been moments when I felt like I couldn't keep going when the weight of the suffering and neglect felt too heavy to bear. The constant stream of animals in need, the long hours, and the emotional exhaustion all contributed to feelings of burnout that left me feeling lost and overwhelmed.
But despite the challenges, I know that the work we do is important and necessary. Every time we save an animal's life or help them recover from trauma, it reminds me why I do what I do. And it's not just the animals we help – it's the people, too. The moments when we are able to connect with a pet owner and help them through a difficult time, or when we are able to inspire a new volunteer to get involved and make a difference, are the moments that keep me going.
I have learned that taking care of myself is just as important as taking care of the animals we rescue. Making time for self-care, such as getting enough rest, taking breaks when needed, and seeking support from colleagues and friends, has helped me to avoid burnout and stay focused on the work we do.

At the end of the day, the emotional burnout we experience in animal rescue is a small price to pay for the lives we are able to save and the love we are able to give. Though it can be a difficult and emotional journey,
the rewards of helping animals in need are immeasurable, and I wouldn't trade this work for anything.
